The Brain and CBD- Brain fog, age-related brain drain, depression, anxiety and traumatic brain injury are all prime research subjects in relation to how CBD can be beneficial.

CBD activates receptors in the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) but it is also involved with receptors outside of the ECS like serotonin which transmits messages between nerve cells. Serotonin receptors regulate the release of cortisol and affect cognition, appetite and mood. In studies, it was observed that CBD stimulated hippocampal nerves in the brain.  It showed neuroprotective effects for brain damage by signaling anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive responses. Per a U.S. government-held patent, CBD can limit the neurological damage following stroke or trauma.  CBD showed neuroprotective effects up to 6 hours after traumatic brain injury. Improved outcomes were seen with ongoing treatment involving CBD up to 14 days post ischemic stroke, when the arteries to the brain become narrowed or blocked causing severely reduced blood flow.  CBD also has the ability to increase anandamide, a very potent chemical in the brain that is one of the more sensitive cannabinoid receptors.

Studies are presently being done at the University of Miami Miller Medical School for treatment with CBD for traumatic brain injury and concussions.  Researchers are looking at different delivery methods but are leaning towards a pill . By improving brain metabolic activity and reducing edema and seizures, the pill should also prove beneficial for PTSD, post-concussion syndrome, seizures, depression and anxiety.

As we age, the tissues in the brain accumulate iron.  This is part of the natural aging process, but if too much iron is collected it can be associated with cognitive dysfunction and linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimers.  New research is showing that CBD may be helpful in protecting the brain from iron build-up.

Brain health will not be achieved by CBD alone. Diet, exercise and lifestyle choices are influential factors too. If you are considering using CBD to benefit brain health, consult your health professional and bring along recognized publications, like those sited in this article. The horizon looks very optimistic for the advancement of brain health and CBD!
