Medication Interactions with CBD

It has been indicated that CBD can sometimes interact with certain prescription medications, primarily those that are “changed and broken down by the liver.”  This refers to the same medications that grapefruit inhibits and those that fall under the SSRI category (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). How you metabolize CBD when taken in conjunction with these medications may require a dosage adjustment, usually decreasing the amount of prescription drugs.  As an added benefit, taking less will decrease the risk of side effects from pharmaceuticals. It is always recommended to consult your health care practitioner when adding CBD to your regimen.

“To the extent that there have been problematic drug interactions with cannabinoids, these have involved high doses of nearly pure CBD isolates, not cannabis in general (and not full spectrum oil)*. Even though THC is an intoxicant and CBD is not, the fact that people tend to use much higher doses of pure CBD isolates makes it a much riskier player in metabolic drug interactions.”  projectcbd.org

In terms of actual clinical practice, I haven’t heard any stories of people having clinical decompensation because of adding CBD to their regime,” stated Harvard physician, Dr. Peter Grinspoon.

Common medications that may interact with CBD include, but are not limited to:

  • ondansetron (Zofran)
  • clozapine (Clozaril, FazaClo)
  • progesterone (Endometrin, Prometrium)
  • testosterone
  • disulfiram (Antabuse)
  • ketamine (Ketalar)
  • phenobarbital (Luminal)
  • omeprazole (Prilosec)
  • lansoprazole (Prevacid)
  • diazepam (Valium)
  • carisoprodol (Soma)
  • ibuprofen (Motrin)
  • celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • amitriptyline (Elavil)
  • warfarin (Coumadin)
  • codeine
  • paroxetine (Paxil)
  • tramadol (Ultram)
  • venlafaxine (Effexor)
  • alprazolam (Xanax)
  • fexofenadine (Allegra)
  • benzodiazepines
  • morphine

When using CBD, it is recommended to leave a two hour window before or after taking any medication. Be informed and choose cannabis products wisely.
